Sanchez-Navitsky said her character – who is dressed in the uniform of a parochial school student – is a lot of fun to portray. She said rehearsing with masks has made them rely more on their bodies as well as their voices for expression. “We will see mouths moving, and facial expressions,” Sanchez-Navitzky said, which will add a new dimension to the interactions of the actors. Bazzano said guidance actually permits solo singers, even in schools, to remove their masks if they step away from other performers, but they have decided not to do that at Hall. Students have been rehearsing in regular face masks, but for the performances will be wearing clear face shields, which is approved by the state’s Department of Public Health.
